"Die angeführte Formel entspricht der Zusammensetzung des reinen rekt. Terpentinöles; von diesem unterscheidet es sich jedoch physikalisch sehr bedeutend, während z. B. das amerikanische Terpentinöl das polarisirte Licht nach rechts, das französische dagegen nach links ablenkt, ist das Tereben vollständig inaktiv. Es ist eine schwach gelbliche, angenehm nach Thymian riechende Flüssigkeit, welche in Wasser schwierig, leichter in Alkohol und sehr leicht in Aether löslich ist. Siedepunkt 156-160°. Dargestellt wird es, indem man Terpentinöl allmälig mit 5% konz. Schwefelsäure mischt und das Reaktionsprodukt nach längerem Stehen im Wasserdampfstrom abdestillirt. Das Destillat wird mit dünner Natriumcarbonatlösung gewaschen, abgehoben, mit Chlorcalcium entwässert und sodann sorgfältig fraktionirt. Die zwischen 156-160° übergehenden Antheile sind das Tereben (B. Fischer)."
